Volunteering
Long Crendon Community Library is run buy a team of volunteers who are responsible for manning the counter but also buying books, answering queries, helping at events and most importantly providing a welcoming, friendly face to library users.
We currently have more than 45 volunteers who come from all walks of life. Volunteering is an opportunity to meet new people, socialise and learn a new skill whilst supporting Long Crendon Community Library.
If you are interested in joining the team please get in touch – drop into the library to pick up a volunteer form from the desk or send us an email through our contact us page.
There is an online e-learning package to complete at home or in the library and then we offer one-to-one training sessions with an experienced volunteer to help you familiarise yourself with the system. You will become part of our very friendly team and can work sessions that fit with your other commitments. We ask for a minimum of one 3-hour session a month but many volunteers do more and we are very flexible.
Basic computer skills are helpful but not essential and you don’t need an encyclopaedic knowledge of books but an interest in them will certainly help!
We also need volunteers to help with events and fundraising.
Benefits of volunteering
People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. Regardless of the motivation, what unites them all is that they find it both challenging and rewarding.
For some it provides an opportunity to:
- give something back to an organisation that has impacted on a person’s life, either directly or indirectly
- make a difference to the lives of others
- help the environment
- help others less fortunate or without a voice
- feel valued and part of a team
- spend quality time away from work or a busy lifestyle
- gain confidence and self-esteem.
For some, volunteering can be a route to employment, or a chance to try something new which may lead to a career change. From this perspective, volunteering can be a way of:
- gaining new skills, knowledge and experience
- developing existing skills and knowledge
- enhancing a CV
- improving one’s employment prospects
- gaining an accreditation
- using one’s professional skills and knowledge to benefit others
For others, volunteering appeals because of its social benefits. These include:
- meeting new people and making new friends
- a chance to socialise
- getting to know the local community.

Fundraising
Long Crendon Community Library is currently supported by Buckinghamshire Council with some financial assistance but in the longer term the library will have to become financially independent. To ensure the library stays open we will rely on grants, fundraising activities and donations. We are determined that the level of service the library currently provides to the community will be maintained but will need help to do this.
Regular donations
Regular donations of any amount are very welcome, even small amounts can make a big difference if enough people support in this way. Please ask in the library for a donation form.
One-off donations
Cash or cheque donations will be gratefully received at the library. Please make cheques payable to Long Crendon Community Library.
Gift Aid
We are a registered charity which means that Gift Aid will apply to appropriate donations and maximise the benefit to the library.
